This image was one of my first abstract paintings. I crossed the boundaries of
realism to venture into a dialogue with vivid color using design. This painting is a
play with the vocabulary of irregular and geometric shapes, color, and
emotion. Even though these shapes were at first carefully drawn out and then painted,
the need for a more spontaneous expression was met by using very wet pigments. The
motion of the paint within the orchestrated shapes set the stage for later work that found
the security of a predetermined drawing unnecessary.
