HieroChing Series:  "Peace"
(The answer to 1 of 4 questions.)

The HieroChing Series was developed by artist Carolyn Goodridge to merge the imagery of two ancient civilizations, the Chinese and the Egyptians.  The age old Chinese I Ching divination system is a means of revealing hidden forces at work in our lives.  By asking a life question, and then by coin tossing, the artist interprets the answers through Hieroglyphics.  Each time the coins are tossed a straight line is drawn, either unbroken or broken in two.  The lines start at the bottom and proceed to the top until there are six lines altogether.  The six-line configuration is called a hexagram.   

The Hieroglyphics used in the paintings are mainly determinatives and simple vocabulary words.  The determinative is a single figure used to indicate and clarify meaning within a word.  The artist finds these images most potent and uses them as signs.   

There are four questions in the HieroChing Series (yielding a total of 30 separate images or answers.)

·        Who Am I?  Answer:  A Leader of Soldiers, “Shuh” - Hexagram #7

·        Where is my strength? Answer:  In Peace, “T-Hai” - Hexagram #11

·        Where can I find my natural aggression?  Answer:  As A Wandering Stranger, “Liu” - Hexagram #56

·        What is the virtue of relationship?  Answer: Self Creating Self, Light Creating Light,  “Yang” - Hexagram #1

 The answers to these questions are illustrated in a series of thirty (30) paintings.  Each canvas is 12”w x 14”h with acrylic paint, gold and silver leaf.  The gold and silver leaf are suggestive of the traditional methods used in creating illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells.  The artist was told by a  Book of Kells scholar that its imagery and scripting has its origins in Hieroglyphs!
